Nanuuk!a game for 2-4 'cool' hunters of 8 years and up by Günter Cornett Game material:- the board![]() - 70 sticks - 4 pieces: hunter (figures height = 4 cm) - 3 pieces: white bear ![]() - 21 pieces: animals (6 fishes, 6 seals, 6 walrusses, 3 whales) - 16 pieces: equipment ( 4 harpoons, 4 huskies, 4 sledges, 4 kayaks) - 4 pieces: inuk
- 4 player-sheets Preparation for play:Every player gets a player-sheet, a hunter, a harpoon, a husky, a sledge and a kayak.Have a look at the player sheet: at the left side there are the places for the animals just hunted and for the hunters own equipment. At the right side there are the places for the animals brought to the igloo and for the equipment the hunter can get from the igloo. At the beginning of the game the harpoon is the hunters own (left side). The other equipment is placed in the igloo (right side). The animal stones, the inuk stones and the white bear pieces are placed on their marked fields on the board. The igloo-fields are free [Please have a look at the german print version: starting situation for 2,3 and 4 players]. The pieces can be placed randomly, if - as far as possible - the inuit and the whales would not be placed next to an igloo and if an inuk would not be placed next to a whale. So first place the inuit and the whales in this way, and then the other stones randomly. (The 2-player-setup shows a whale next to an iglo, but it's a corner field blocked by a white bear. The 3-player-setup shows an inuk at this field not blocked, but the inuit are far away from the whales). The reason for this rule: a player would get a too big advantage if his first three steps can be inuk-whale-igloo = 4 points and a whole equipment. Objection of the gameThe best hunter will win this game. So all hunters try to hunt the most and biggest animals (at the end of the game a hunted fish scores 1 a seal 2 a walrus 3 and a whale 4 points). But at every move the big ice lump bursts a little and handicaps the way. If a hunter meet the white bear he will loose his harpoon. If a hunter reaches an igloo he may changes the hunted animals into equipment to get an advantage for further hunting.Starting the game:One after another the players place their hunters in an igloo they want.In the whole game is valid: On an igloo field there may stay one to four hunters.
How to move:
A hunter goes exactly one field. If he is outside an igloo-field he's not allowed to wait (in an igloo he can stay as many turns as he want. This is important at the end of the game). At the field where his movement ends the ice lump bursts. The player marks the place where the ice is bursting with a stick. Please have a look at the drawing: The hunter goes from A to B. If there is no stick at one or more of the c-lines, the player chooses a c-line for placing a stick. If all c-lines are occupied with a stick he chooses a d-line.
A hunter on E cannot go to F because there is a stick (=crack) between E and F. Exception: if the hunter has an own kayak (left side of his player-sheet) he may use the kayak to cross the crack. By doing this he looses his kayak (and places it back to the right site of his player-sheet).
How to hunt:If you've moved on a hex with an animal (not: white bear) and placed your stick (don't forget it!), you may take the animal stone. Place it on the animals place at the left side of your player-sheet.But you cannot place the animal stone on your player-sheet if:
How to get equipment (in the igloo):If a hunter reaches an igloo he may exchange:
If a hunter leaves animals in an igloo he moves the animal stones from the left side of his player-sheet to the right side. At the right side of the player-sheets he may places as many animals as he hunted (even two or more of the same kind). Then he moves his new equipment from the right side to the left side.
If a hunter leaves a whale in an igloo the inuk 'decides' to stay in the igloo too. How to use equipment:The harpoon can be used again and again for hunting animals. But all other equipment can be used only at one time. By using it the player moves the equipment from the left side of his player-sheet to the right side. When he comes to an igloo again he may exchange it again.A hunter may use a kayak for crossing a crack (moving across a stick) at one time. Using a dog with a sledge gives the hunter an extra turn:(double move, double hunt, double crack). You cannot use a dog without a sledge or a sledge without a dog. How to meet the white bear (or better not?):If you want to go on a field with a white bear you have to dislodge it first by throwing your harpoon (moving your harpoon from the left side of your player-sheet to the right side). You move the white bear to another free hex field on the board. You may choose one of all fields of the board, excluding the igloos and the fields where an animal or a hunter is.Because you lost your harpoon you've to go to an igloo to get it back before further hunting. End of game / scoring:The game ends, when all animals within reach are hunted. Before the game ends the hunters may try to go back to the igloo. If they reached an igloo or it's evident that this isn't possible the game ends. For reaching the igloo they may use more than one move. But even at moving back the ice cracks at every move. The players get points for each animal they hunted (= for all animal stones at the left and right side of the player-sheet):
